We have been saddened to hear of the death of our former Rector and friend, Canon Noel Battye.

Noel was appointed to St Finnian’s in the autumn of 1980 and retired in December 2008 after 28 years devoted service. His presence enriched the parish; his vision, expressed through his gift of language, inspired the congregation.

We give thanks to God for the dedicated pastor he was and for a ministry that touched the lives of so many people.

Bishop Harold Miller pays tribute …

I was so sorry to hear of the recent death of Canon Noel Battye.

Although a Waterford man, the vast majority of Noel’s ministry was exercised in Northern Ireland. The parish in which he served longest was St Finnian’s Cregagh, where he had a very effective ministry, characterised by thoughtful, warm–hearted preaching and devoted pastoral care.

Noel’s knowledge of hymnody and a wide range of Christian music served him well as presenter of ‘Sounds Sacred’ in Radio Ulster for decades. He always had a superb turn of phrase and a twinkle in his eye, which could be picked up on the airwaves!

Noel died confident in the truth and reality of the resurrection, and we can confidently but quietly entrust him to the Lord Jesus whom he loved and served.
