Illuminare
A Celebration of Charles Wood and Saint Cecilia
Belfast Philharmonic Choir
Ulster Orchestra
This special concert brings together history, faith and music in a celebration of artistic inspiration across the centuries. Presented in the magnificent surroundings of St Peter’s Cathedral, Belfast, and marking the 160th anniversary of the cathedral’s construction and dedication, the programme honours one of Ireland’s most distinguished musical figures, Charles Wood, while also celebrating Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music and musicians.
The year 2026 marks the centenary of Charles Wood’s death. Born in Armagh in 1866, Wood became one of the most influential composers and teachers of his generation. His contribution to Anglican church music remains unsurpassed, and through his teaching at Cambridge he helped shape a generation of composers including Ralph Vaughan Williams, Herbert Howells and others who would define British choral music in the twentieth century. This concert commemorates his legacy with two of his finest sacred works.
The programme also embraces the vitality of contemporary choral composition through music by American composer Elaine Hagenberg and Lithuanian composer Kristina Vasiliauskaitė, whose settings explore themes of light, devotion and the universal power of music.
